Upholstery might seem intimidating at first, but making a comfortable seat cushion is well within the skillset of any woodworker. In this video series, upholsterer Michael Mascelli takes you through the process of upholstering the drop-in seat cushion frame for an Arts & Crafts rocking chair built by Mike Pekovich.
You’ll learn how to:
- Assemble a simple yet effective set of basic tools for upholstery
- Create a sprung foundation with zigger springs
- Build up a base of various foam and Dacron layers to get the right shape and comfort
- Top it off with a folded and tacked show cover of leather or vinyl, and a simple neat dust cover on the bottom.
In the final episode, you’ll learn how to finish the cushion with a vinyl show cover and a dust cover that keeps the dust in.

What a cool series!! Thank you Mr. Mascelli.
Very enjoyable and informative. Thank you Mr. Mascelli.
Just finished the whole series, thank you Mr. Mascelli, always wanted to learn about upholstering my projects, have some tools on the way already.....thanks again.
Thanks Mike. I feel like I could do my own now.
One of the best "how-to's" I've seen. Very informative with a good explanation of the process and options available, i.e. tool and material selection.
Thank you.
One of the best ever! Really well done Mike Mascelli and FWW!!!
Excellent series. Your explanations were perfect. I may have to manufacture a project just to try out the techniques
Beautiful work by one of the absolute best instructors I have ever seen in any craft field. Clear, concise, complete! Thanks so much.
Great series. Thank you Mr. Mascelli. You were great. As a woodworker, I have always wanted to learn about upholstery. Credit must also go to the folks at FWW for having the sense to create this series. Well done guys. My membership is very well rewarded by your insight into what woodworkers want.
Enjoyed it, thank you!
Great job, Mike. Is this series available as a dvd? Thanks again!
A master craftsman and a master teacher. Bravo! Wonderful series.
Fantastic series Mike... enjoyed it tremendously.
So very good. NOW, I will bookmark it for review when I complete the chair. The seats bothered me, thinking I would have to pay someone else.
Great presentation! Your steps were clear and you did a very nice job of ensuring the audience could see and feel the process. I’m encouraged to give this a go now.
A suburb introduction to upholstery for woodworkers. Let's hope a DVD depicting this series can be bought in the future. Many thanks Mike from Dorset, England
Thank you for lesson, how to use tacks on matching and for indroduction of tools (especially tack remover)!
When I install jute webbing I put always end of the webbing under nail heads (underside sometimes even twice), then nailheads don't "eat" webbing so easily. And it is not so hard to ease also edge of the frame innerside, to protect webbing from wearing.
Excellent, thank you - really well presented.
Now I can start looking for tools and materials with confidence.
What a great instructor! You make it look do-able. I look forward to giving this a try.
Just excellent!
One of the best instructional series I’ve ever seen, and excellent quality work. Really enjoyed it! Thank you!
Wow! Thank you so much for this video workshop. I've always been intimidated by upholstery work. I think I could pull this off!
One of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. I learned as much from this series as an entire semester in upholstery school.
Worth the price of admission! Mike, I've don't have any experience with this skill, but I've always been interested in how it's done. Fascinating, thanks for sharing your talents. FWW, thank you also for doing this series!
This is a great series, one of the best how-tos I've seen. No extra fluff and chatter, just "brass tacks." Thank you!
Lovely presentation and teaching technique. I am very much encouraged to make the upholstered seats for my counter oblong stools. Thank you.
Excellent video series! I especially like the way you synchronize the amount of talking and the amount of work you do! It is as if like there is exactly as much to do as to say! Thank you very much, Mr. Mascelli!
Wonderful teaching presentation. Good pacing. No fluff. Just the essentials delivered in a clear and direct manner. Also, kudos to the videographer.
being a retired upholsterer , I found this truly hard to watch . I get that this is for someone that would only use this once in their lifetime , I still think that being in fine woodworking it should have been the same quality instruction
