I'm surprised to see how far up on the blank you're making the initial roughing cuts. And they're pretty heavy, too. Aren't you concerned that once the axe bites into the wood, you're committed and have to follow where the grain splits? Are you just really good at reading the grain, or because you're working in green wood does it hang together well so opening up a long and inaccurate split is not an issue?
This is a great series, very well produced, and you're an excellent explainer of things. I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

I cant say how much I am loving watching this... Out of curiosity will this ever be released as a DVD?
No plans for a DVD at this time. By leaving the thought of a DVD out of our minds when producing these videos, it allows us to not worry about length of the video. Otherwise we'd be worried about fitting it into a "box", and not making it as detailed as possible.
Really enjoying the series. David is very skilled and confident. A video on how he sharpens his tools would be great.
Zolton: After working with a particular blank in the stages prior to this, I know the grain well. Green wood will split even easier than dry wood, so you could still make a big mistake. It's just a matter of getting to know the log and the way the grain is working through the earlier processes. Confidence with the axe developed over time is a factor as well.
