He’s built dozens of round Shaker stands over four decades, so there is no one more qualified than Christian Becksvoort to demonstrate making this classic.
In this seven-part video series, you’ll learn how to:
- Turn the wine-bottle post
- Shape the legs, softening the edges with a lathe-mounted sanding drum
- Hand-cut dovetails to attach the legs to the post
- Add a beautiful hand-rubbed finish with oil and varnish
- And lot’s more!
In this episode, Chris spends more time at the lathe-mounted drum sander, adding a profile to the legs before he glues up the base of the Shaker candle stand.

Chris’s pieces are so beautiful, it was almost comforting to see that even he has occasional problems (the one leg not sliding fully in). It would be interesting to see how he was able to correct it.
I agree with jiminvermont. The video was informative and very well done. But, perhaps an important opportunity was lost. Learning from a master how to correct a clearly visible error would be of great interest. Also a bit more about using the contents of the master's glue-water-sanding dust potion would be great.
I agree with the two comments above. Would love to see Chris' fix for the gap. Hating the thought of Chris retiring---and hope he will continue his contributions to FW.
The only issue was that he didn't push it in all the way. Maybe we made it out to be more of a fix than it was. He just noticed it and pushed it down real quick. It was 20 seconds.
You know me. Much to our contributors chagrin, I LOVE to show the screw ups and the fixes that go with them.
That's because we all make them. You know the acronym FAIL......First Attempt In Learning!
