The Lutyens Garden Bench
Full-size drawings and accurate templates help break a classic bench design into manageable parts.
This bench was designed more than 100 years ago by Edward Lutyens, a British architect and designer. It has a whimsical frame around classically regimented slats on the back. In explaining how to build this challenging bench, Tony O’Malley discusses woods that are appropriate for outdoor use, and then the steps involved in construction, starting with the seat frame, the back, the rolled arms, and attaching the seat. Project plans and several detailed drawings show all the parts involved and provide templates for curved parts.
